This week I want to discuss the importance of presentation. How loose parts get introduced to your toddlers is critical for capturing their attention. When starting to use loose parts with small children you will want to start small; having too many parts may be overwhelming for them and as we know toddlers can get overwhelmed quickly. I often use lots of textured pieces, toddlers LOVE sensory experiences. Another thing to think about in your presentation is the visual aspect. I often use my light table; children are naturally drawn to light and are generally calmed by the visual stimulation. My colleague Kim uses a table that she often changes the table cloth on a weekly basis. It’s always a solid colour with minimal loose parts and is placed right under a beautiful light fixture. Sometimes you will see us use unique place mats or trays. Even the change in environment may get a different outcome in their play. On a beautiful sunny day I like to spend most of our time outdoors, I tend to bring my daily activities with us. Loose parts are a fun and exciting learning tool but, I believe the display of the loose parts is essential for the best possible play experience.
